Anannya Chauhan

Robin Sharma is a Canadian writer, best known for his The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari book series,  Megaliving: 30 Days to a Perfect Life, The Leader Who Had No Title, Who Will Cry When You Die and The 5 AM Club. His books are helping people all over the world lead great lives.

As far as ‘The 5AM Club’ is concerned, it talks about a story of an entrepreneur and an artist who meet a billionaire (Mr. Riley) at the famous Spellbinder’s personal optimization conference. All three of them (Mr. Riley, artist and entrepreneur) were unknown to each other. Exhausted and frustrated from their current lives, the artist and the entrepreneur agreed to Mr. Riley’s offer to come with him for an adventurous trip where he will be teaching them both the secret of a life greatly lived. Sharma, the author of the book, via the character of Mr. Riley teaches a variety of concepts, tips and tactics and all of them are designed to help people to get up at 5 AM every single day for the rest of their lives. Both The artist and the entrepreneur initially find it difficult to leave the bed at early morning but gradually they realized that it becomes easy for them to do so rather than not doing so.

The central theme of the book, as the name suggests, is waking up at 5 AM  and lead a life that only 1% of the population lead. Sharma makes his readers understand the significance of getting up at 5 by giving a phrase and repeating it throughout the book, i.e, “Own your morning, elevate your life.” The core of the book lies in the 20/20/20 principle which directs us to take out the first 20 minutes of the day for rigorous exercise, the next 20 minutes for meditation and journal and the last 20 minutes for reading books, consuming audiobooks or podcasts. This, Mr. Riley, calls the victory hour (from 5:00 – 6:00 in the morning).

Along with this, the book has a mention of various other principles as well such as The 60/10 method, The 90/90/1 rule, The 60 minutes student, The dream team technique, Traffic University, The daily 5 concept and so on. These techniques are practical as well as applicable and so everybody reading the book can easily apply these techniques into their lives and get the desired results. Following these principles religiously, one can definitely enhance their healthset, soulset, mindset and heartset. The author also emphasizes the fact that we only pay attention to improving our mindset, which constitutes only 25% of the success that we achieve in our life. The rest three sets are equally important to be taken care of to get 100% results for our hardwork and efforts and a guaranteed success.

Overall, it can be said that the book takes into consideration all the aspects of lives, from morning routine to the evening routine and at night preparing for the next day to repeat the cycle. It focuses on essentialness of a good sleep as well. The book is a must read for all the people who want to uplift their lives to a greater level and live it to the fullest in a good and healthy manner. In today’s world, which is full of digital distractions and lethargy, the book provides a way out by limiting the digital distractions to a particular period of time in a day, and especially not in the morning and just before sleep. Undoubtedly, it is one of masterpieces produced by Robin Sharma and also one among the greatest books written under genre of self-help books.
