HRD Ministry issues guidelines on duration of Online Classes

16th July 2020: The Ministry of Human Resource Development has issued guidelines on the duration of online classes after several concerns by parents over increased screen time exposure for students attending online classes instead of classroom teaching. Considering these concerns, the ministry has issued guidelines namely ‘PRAGYATA’ recommending cap on the durations and number of sessions for a day.

As per the guidelines, it has been said particularly that the duration of online classes for pre-primary students should not be more than 30 minutes. For classes 1st to 8th there should be two sessions of 45 minutes each, whereas 30 to 45 minutes of four sessions each for classes 9th to 12th standard has been recommended.

Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ said  “The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the closure of schools and has affected over 240 million children of the country who are enrolled in schools. Extended school closures may cause loss of learning. To mitigate the impact of the pandemic, schools will not only have to remodel but also reimagine the way teaching and learning have happened so far. But will also need to introduce a suitable method of delivering quality education through a healthy mix of schooling at home and schooling at school.”

He added, “The guidelines have been developed from the perspective of learners with a focus on online, blended, digital education for students who are currently at home due to lockdown. 20 guidelines on digital education provide a roadmap or pointers for carrying forward online education to enhance the quality of education.”

Amidst the COVID-19 situation, keeping in mind that imparting education should not stop, the schools are conducting online classes.
